Massages...just for pampering, right?

This is the first in a series of blog posts about common pain or dysfunction issues people have, and how Yoga and Massage can help remedy the situation.

Many of my yoga clients suffer with tight shoulders and neck, upper back also being an issue.

I always try to address this as best I can within a group class, although working one-to-one would always be preferable to really focus on the specific needs of the individual.

However there are some asana sequences – if you prefer you can call them movements and stretches - that you can do at home to alleviate the pain and loosen up the neck, shoulders and upper back. I regularly include sequences in my yoga classes to release and mobilise these problem areas.

Another recommendation is to schedule regular massages. Unfortunately (and I used to be in this category myself), we see massage as a luxury instead of a necessity. The image of a spa, a pile of balanced stones and perhaps a hot tub tend to spring to mind when people think of massage; this is when we 'treat ourselves' or someone buys it for us and it is mainly for relaxation. Massage is terrific in all those scenarios.

However, even a regular 30 minute maintenance massage would benefit most people with their range of movement and posture-related discomfort, regardless of their sporting prowess. Sports massage is a bit of a misnomer as it suggests only athletes would need one. I prefer to call it Remedial massage or Deep Tissue Massage for non-sporty clients as using the word 'Sports' can be off-putting. This type of massage identifies muscle dysfunction, restrictions and their origins as well as what we refer to as 'knots' and specifically targets these areas. It can also help with relaxation, which is a bonus!

Come along to one of my classes or book a massage appointment with me, and we can work together to bring you back into a place of balance and wellbeing.
